The Offering

Twenty harvests of work. Handed to you running.

Coffin Ridge was the first commercial winery in Grey-Bruce and the first to prove that northern vineyards could excel. It is approaching its 20th harvest, and now it is for sale.

You don't start from bare land and a business plan. You get 22 acres of established vines, a purpose-built winery, a brewery and taproom, two homes, 35,000 to 40,000 visitors a year, and founders prepared to help you through the handover.

The Ridge

80 acres on the hill. Georgian Bay below.

The property sits on the rolling hills outside Annan, high enough that the farmland falls away in every direction and Georgian Bay fills the horizon.

That view is what your visitors drive up for. It is also what you wake up to. 80.49 acres freehold, with the vineyard, the winery, the brewery and both houses gathered on one ridge.

  • 80.49 acres freehold
  • 22 acres of vines
  • Views to Georgian Bay
  • Two residences

The Summer Music Series plays at sunset, and the ridge was made for it. The light drops behind the hills, the deck fills up and the tasting room windows start to glow.

Up the rise, the house lights come on. You lock up the winery and walk home.

Evening photographs taken on the property.

The Story

From boulders to vines.

Neil and Gwen Lamont bought fallow land covered in hawthorn thickets and boulders the size of houses. The old barns and farmhouse had burned down years before. Neither of them had farmed.

They dynamited the boulders, tore out the hawthorn and planted their first two acres of vines in 1999. The winery opened in 2007 and sold out every bottle within nine weeks. It was the first commercial winery in Grey-Bruce and the first to plant Marquette. What you take over is the proof that it works up here.

  • First vines 1999
  • Opened 2007
  • First winery in Grey-Bruce
  • First to plant Marquette

The Vineyard

22 acres of vines bred for the north.

Every vine here is a cold-hardy varietal: Marquette, Baco Noir, Geisenheim, L'Acadie Blanc, Frontenac and Frontenac Gris, Prairie Star and La Crescent. They are bred to come through a northern winter.

The Marquette from these rows has taken double gold at the All Canadian Wine Championships multiple years in a row. You inherit the vines, the know-how and the track record on the first day.

  • Marquette
  • Baco Noir
  • L'Acadie Blanc
  • Frontenac & Frontenac Gris

In the Glass

Wine, cider and beer with a story on every label.

The names fit the ridge: Back From The Dead Red, Into The Light White and Resurrection Rosé. Then the varietal wines: Marquette, Baco Noir and L'Acadie Blanc, and the Divine Intervention Series of sparkling whites, sparkling rosés and an orange wine.

Night Spirit is a Bourbon-barrelled Marquette that carries Tom Thomson's Northern Lights on the label, made with the Tom Thomson Art Gallery. The Forbidden craft ciders come Dry, Hopped and Pink, and Brush with Death is a rosemary maple cider with Thomson's Canoe Lake. You get the brands, the recipes and the following they've built.

  • Back From The Dead Red
  • Divine Intervention Series
  • Night Spirit
  • Forbidden ciders

Tasting Room & Deck

Where 35,000 visitors a year sit down.

The tasting room is built around a curved wooden bar, with arched windows framing the vineyard. Outside, the deck runs off the tasting room with umbrellas, lounge seating and the long view to the bay.

The menu already works: Vintner's Plates, butter boards, gourmet grilled cheese, focaccia and wood-fired pizza on weekends. Visitors come from across Ontario, including the GTA and Collingwood. You open the doors to them on day one.

  • Curved tasting bar
  • Deck with bay views
  • Vintner's Plates
  • Weekend wood-fired pizza

Kilannan Brewery

A brewery and taproom, already pouring.

About two years ago the winery revived Kilannan Brewery on site, with its own brewhouse and taproom. Beer drinkers now have their reason to make the drive, and your guests have one more reason to stay.

Outside there's a beer garden on the lawn with barrel stacks, picnic tables and bright umbrellas. One property, two drinks businesses, one stream of visitors.

A year on the ridge

Four seasons. Four reasons to drive up the hill.

Coffin Ridge isn't a summer-only stop. The calendar is already built: music at sunset, ghost walks in October, a Christmas market in November and heated igloos through the winter.

01

Spring

Bud break across 22 acres of cold-hardy vines. Focaccia and Vintner's Plates on the deck, with the bay in view.

02

Summer

The Summer Music Series at sunset. Weekend wood-fired pizza, butter boards and a full deck looking out to Georgian Bay.

03

Fall

Harvest on the ridge, then the October Ghost Walks on Coffin Hill. The season this winery's name was made for.

04

Winter

Five heated igloos keep the view open all winter, and the November Christmas Market opens the season.

Weddings & Events

The venue is half built. The upside is all yours.

The winery already rents its tasting bar, tent and grounds for private events. An on-site wedding venue is partly built. That is revenue the current owners have not tapped, and it is ready for the next owner to finish and book.

The setting does the selling: timber frame seats on the ridge, Muskoka chairs facing the sunset, a tented dining area and a deck that glows at golden hour.

  • Private event rentals
  • Tent and grounds
  • Wedding venue partly built
  • Sunset ceremonies

The Working Winery

6,128 square feet, built for the job.

The purpose-built winery holds production, the tasting bar and the taproom under one roof. Tanks, bays, storage and a prep kitchen are already in place and already working.

A new owner walks into a running operation, not a construction project.

  • 6,128 sq ft winery
  • Production rooms
  • Storage
  • Prep kitchen
